With the average age for first time buyers now standing at around 30 years old, it's easy to understand why many young couples feel disillusioned with the housing market. However, one couple from Tonbridge have shown that with the help of shared ownership you needn't wait to get on the housing ladder.
Having recently got engaged, Chloe Osborne, 20 and Christopher Gurney, 24, wanted to own a home they could call their own. After learning about shared ownership through research on the internet, they soon realised their dream could become a reality much sooner than they had expected.
The couple purchased a two bedroom flat in a brand new waterside development in Tonbridge, Kent after living with Christopher's parents for over year to save up for a deposit.
"If we hadn't bought through shared ownership, we would still be living with Christopher's parents, as there's no way we would have been able to afford to buy a place of our own on the open market."
They bought a 35% share for around £80,000 at Sovereign Way, a new development by Centra Living, part of Circle Housing. "The location is great for us as it's really close to all of our family. Our lives are very family orientated, so that is a big factor for us." The development is also well placed for commuting into London, with Tonbridge station only a 40 minute train journey into Charing Cross.
Chloe doesn't have any regrets about the decision. "We are so happy, it's changed our lives," she said.
Deposit was around £5,000
